Open Space Committee Minutes 04/23/08
Open Space Committee
Draft Minutes from meeting 4/23/08
Members Present: Frank Dobek, Sue Haley, Bob Cook, Dave Read, Sue Horton, Glen Collins
Staff Present: Rachel Hutchinson
Others present: Steve Gulrich

Meeting was brought to order at 7:10 PM.

Mr. Collins made a motion to approve minutes after a few minor corrections were made. New amended minutes are attached.

Mr. Collins provided an update on the incident at Nickerson Park. The Conservation Commission has made a decision to have the contractor at fault fill the ruts and rake the ground disturbance by hand immediately, before the spring growing season begins. The bridge will remain closed until the grade of the ramps to the bridge are brought to code.  Committee Members offered to provide labor for a volunteer day to shovel gravel and grade the ramp.

Discussion on how to proceed on trail head signs at all town open space sites was tabled until the next meeting.

The committee reviewed and edited drafts of text for plant labels. More work is necessary on the graphic component of the labels before they are sent out for production.

Much of the work based on the fire management plan has been completed. Brush was piled and burned with assistance from Americorp of Cape Cod, Cape Cod National Seashore, and some committee members, with Eastham Fire Department on site. Additional funds from Firewise grants will be used to educate abutters about fire safe practices.

The Open Space Plan is being reedited and will be sent out soon.

A review and refinement of the Open Space implementation schedule was postponed to another meeting.

Ten American hollys from the Ashumet/Holly Audubon Sanctuary in Falmouth were planted by the Friends of 1651 Arboretum. Five more will be planted soon.

The next meeting was scheduled for 6/4 at 6 PM and will meet at the Herring Run parking area.

Sue Horton made a motion to adjourn the meeting and Frank Dobek seconded. All approved. Meeting was adjourned at 8:45 PM.

Respectfully submitted,

Sue Haley
